Before choosing your birds, think about what you want.
Do you want to keep them in an aviary or a cage?

Inspect the birds before you purchase them take your time They should be lively, avoid any that are inactive and have roughed up feathers Check eyes and nostrils for any discharge.
If you want birds for exhibition purposes you should purchase from a breeder where you can get information on the origin of the birds.

Always take a suitable container with you when purchasing new birds, small travelling boxes are inexpensive.

I am going to be setting up an outdoor aviary in my back garden in the near future but i only have enough room to build an aviary 6ft long by 3ft wide and 6ft 6in high. My plan is to house 2 pairs of lovebirds, 1 pair will be black masked and the other Fischers. Will my aviary be large enough to house these birds?. Secondly, will the 2 species live together in relative harmony and will they breed in such a small aviary?. I know i'm asking a lot of questions but my previous experience of birdkeeping was with Budgerigars and they are quite different. I only want to do this on a small scale just for a hobby and for pleasure. I have no intentions of showing, expanding etc in the future. Thanks to anyone who can advise me.
